…but it appears that the Ataribox will be similar to the NES and SNES Classic in providing access to old titles in modern retro hardware.

If the thing allows additional software to run on it beyond whatever is bundled it could get a following, especially from those who've hacked the NES classic.

I'm very interested in that wood one, the black/red one looks okay but not as Atari for me.

The email I got about it says it will play old and new software so be interesting to find out exactly what they mean, also has an SD Card slot, so hopefully you can load ROMs via that.

With the designs it looks like they're trying to mimic the two popular models of the 2600, the "woody" and the "vader" - smart choice I reckon because the smaller version that came out later (2600jr) was a bit cheap looking back then and wouldn't get much better now even with a refresh.

This is a weird one for me - now that I read more I think the pricing and specs might kill it. I don't think I would be interested unless it were half the price, ie. closer to a NES/SNES classic. Otherwise, they could have got away with selling this as software or a service for PCs for what it might offer.

My opinion might be VERY biased though considering the number of real Atari machines I have at home.

I don't think that's 'bias' (unfair judgement against something), just an appreciation of the originals. It doesn't mean you're blind to the benefits and new hardware (that would be bias), and probably better informed than most people to make a judgement of its merits.

Yeah, i'm not comfortable with their valuation. So for that reason, i'm out.
